What is occupational stress?

Occupational stress can present itself as a number of different medical complaints, such as, post traumatic stress, depression or a specific phobia. A diagnosis from a medical expert would be required first.

The Health & Safety Executive defines stress as "the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demands placed upon them".

In occupational stress cases it is only the work related demands and pressures that are relevant.

How do I claim compensation?

In order to claim compensation it is necessary to show a number of points. They are:

• The employer should have foreseen that the employee was at risk of sustaining a psychiatric disorder.
• Whether the action taken by the employer was that of a reasonable employer
• That the stress at work is the cause of the injury
